Fraud Investigator III

Under the California Whistleblower Protection Act, we determine whether allegations of improper governmental activities are true. If state agencies or employees are acting improperly, our team investigates them and publishes reports. We also follow-up to make sure our recommendations for corrective action are implemented.

What is the position?
As the Fraud Investigator III, you serve an important role in promoting accountability and transparency in California government by supervising a team of four to ten staff members conducting investigations into waste, fraud, and abuse within state agencies. The Fraud Investigator III manages highly complex, critical, and sensitive investigations on allegations of improper governmental activities and ensures the accuracy and quality of supporting documents and investigative reports. Additionally, you oversee the daily operations of the office's investigative program including the development and administration of policies and procedures, selecting staff, assigning priorities, evaluating staff work, and developing work plans and training.
What will you do?
- Supervise the ongoing work of investigators responsible for conducting investigations into allegations of improper governmental activities.
- Ensure that investigative projects are managed effectively.
- Make decisions on investigative strategies and assume responsibility for the accuracy and quality of investigative reports.
- Perform analysis of evidence to draw sound defensible conclusions regarding allegations of improper governmental activities.
- Draft reports regarding results of investigations and follow up on the results/recommendations of an investigation.
- Oversee the development of thorough and accurate investigative reports, including gathering and organizing evidence to support conclusions.
- Effectively work and communicate with others including supervisors, coworkers, and representatives from outside entities.

- You are willing to travel to various work locations throughout California, and work long and irregular hours to complete work activities.
- You possess a valid certificate for Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).
