What Will You Do?
As a Financial Auditor (Auditor Evaluator I), you will work on one of the largest financial audits in the world. Financial Auditors ensure California’s multi-billion dollar financial statements are fairly stated by analyzing financial data, assessing controls over financial reporting, and evaluating risks. This work is necessary for California to receive billions in federal funds each year that impact schools and other public services. Specifically, you will:
- Work as a member of the financial audit team to audit the annual financial statements for state government and issue the independent auditor’s opinion on the annual comprehensive financial report.
- Understand and apply generally accepted accounting principles while reviewing financial information and identify changes from new auditing and accounting pronouncements that affect the presentation for financial reporting purposes.
- Collect and analyze evidence to convey strong, compelling support that is responsive to the audit plan and complies with government auditing standards.
- Track, interpret and analyze data using various analytical techniques to evaluate the financial activity reported.
- Thoroughly and accurately prepare analyses to support audit fieldwork.
- Communicate extensively with government officials and colleagues in a collaborative environment to obtain necessary information and to convey information related to audit procedures, findings, and recommendations.

- You have a Bachelor’s Degree or higher, preferably in a field related to Accounting or Business Administration (registered college seniors can begin the process but must graduate before starting).
How Do I Join?
The California State Auditor is part of the merit-based California civil service selection system. To complete this process, you must do the following:
- Create a profile on our website www.auditor.ca.gov/application/
- Upload your resume and take our exam by March 20 at 12:00pm.
- Log into your profile, get your results, and enter the hiring process by March 22 at 11:59pm.
- If your exam score is high enough, we will contact you with the next steps of the hiring process.
Current or former state employees with transfer eligibility may submit their application through their CalCareer account at www.jobs.ca.gov. If you are not a state employee, or your state classification is not eligible to transfer, you must take the exam to be considered for the position. What is the Hiring Timeline?
There are multiple steps to the hiring process including an exam and multiple interviews. The general steps in the hiring process are as follows:
- You will receive an invitation to complete a pre-recorded video interview within two weeks of applying if your exam score is high enough. You will have ten calendar days to complete your pre-recorded video interview.
- You will be notified in Late-April, after the final filing date, if you are moving forward in the hiring process out of fairness to all applicants.
- You will participate in an in-person interview in early May and be notified if you are moving forward within two weeks of your in-person interview.
- You will join our team in mid-June or early July 2024.

* Salary Range A: $67,440 - $81,744 or Salary Range B: $73,188 - $96,240

This position is eligible for participation in the office's hybrid telework program. Work at the alternate work location must be conducted in a space that is ergonomically sound, private, distraction-free, and has safe working conditions to be eligible to telework.
