What will you do?
As the Accounting Administrator II, you are responsible for managing and overseeing the workload of professional accounting staff in the Fiscal and Business Services unit. The accounting staff perform a wide variety of complex accounting, reporting, budgets and other fiscal related work dedicated to ensuring the financial integrity of the State Auditor's office. Specifically, the Accounting Administrator II will:
- Monitor internal control processes and develop business rules and configurations for accounting systems.
- Review and approve disbursements, administer the travel program and provide training on travel policies and procedures.
- Manage month-end and year-end closing activities including general ledger maintenance, cash and expense reconciliations and budget to actual reports.
- Oversee the preparation of annual financial statements and serve as the coordinator for the annual independent audit.
- Direct the development of the office budget and provide guidance and direction to staff performing statewide cost allocation tracking, monitoring and reporting activities.
- Monitor staff workflow, provide leadership, training, and professional development to staff.
Who are you?
- You have working knowledge and experience with financial, government, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) accounting functions.
- You have experience processing, reviewing, analyzing, reconciling, and reporting general ledger and financial data.
- You have experience implementing and monitoring state travel program rules and policies.
- You have knowledge and experience with policies related to state disbursement and internal controls over cash and other assets.
- You have experience analyzing and preparing budget projections and forecasts.
- You have experience using a wide variety of accounting systems and evaluating, implementing new or upgraded accounting systems.
- You possess strong organizational and time management skills and the ability to self-manage in an environment with multiple projects with moving deadlines.
- You have the ability to develop strong working relationships and to interact with individuals at all levels in a professional manner.
- You have the ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
- You have experience leading and managing teams while demonstrating the ability to communicate a clear vision, set and monitor goals and expectations, foster a collaborative work environment, and encourage leadership and initiative.
How do I join?
The California State Auditor is part of the merit-based California civil service selection system. To complete this process, you must do the following:
- Take the State exam for the Accounting Administrator II position. If you are a current state employee with transfer eligibility, you can skip this step. If you are not a state employee, or your state classification is not eligible to transfer, you must take the exam to be considered for the position.

- Submit a Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) responding to the two questions below using specific examples of your education, training and experience. Your responses will help us determine who to interview for the position. Create a document using a word processing application such as Microsoft Word, and limit your response to one page. - Describe the accounting systems you have used including your experience with either implementing a new system or system upgrades.
